Great Press Conference of Colombia Migrant!

On November 14, the organization Colombia Migrante will host a significant press conference to share critical information about the migration status of Colombians in the United States. In this context, it is essential to emphasize the importance of the Deferred Enforced Departure (DED) designation for over 500,000 undocumented Colombians. This measure could provide them with protection and, eventually, an opportunity to regularize their immigration status.

Why Is the DED Designation Important for Colombians?

Colombia has endured decades of internal conflict, exacerbated by the abandonment of the 2016 peace agreement by the previous administration. Currently, the country is prioritizing peace and stability, which will bring positive effects not only to the nation but also to the Western Hemisphere. In this context, the United States plays a pivotal role by supporting Colombia’s efforts to implement the peace agreement and ensure regional stability.

What Does DED Entail?

The Deferred Enforced Departure (DED) designation would protect undocumented Colombians from deportation, allowing them to work and live without fear of being separated from their families. This protection would reflect U.S. support for peace in Colombia, demonstrating a commitment to strengthening bilateral relations and recognizing Colombia’s role as a key ally in the region.

The Vital Role of the United States

President Biden holds the constitutional power and authority to grant DED to undocumented Colombians—a decision that could become a defining part of his presidential legacy. Although a path to citizenship was not achieved in 2022, the DED designation would represent a bold step toward protecting Colombians in the U.S. It would also enhance the United States’ leadership in addressing global migration and climate challenges.

This press conference aims to raise awareness about the significance of the DED designation and advocate for tangible solutions that support the Colombian immigrant community in the United States.

Press Conference

In this context of urgency and need, Colombia Migrante invites the community to join the press conference scheduled for November 14, 2024. During this event, the importance of the Deferred Enforced Departure (DED) designation will be discussed, along with how this measure could change the lives of hundreds of thousands of Colombians residing in the United States.

This press conference will not only serve as a platform to share crucial information but also to shed light on the situation of the Colombian community and raise awareness about the significance of this issue in U.S. immigration policy.
