National Day of the Colombian Migrant in New York

October 10th is a meaningful date for the Colombian community in the United States as we celebrate National Colombian Migrant Day. This year, we joined the Consulate of Colombia in New York to commemorate this important occasion, focusing on providing valuable information and resources to our community.

The Importance of the Celebration

Migration is an issue that touches many Colombian families. We recognize and value the hard work and contributions of our compatriots as they build better lives abroad. This event not only aims to celebrate but also to inform and empower Colombian migrants.

Launch of the Anti-Immigration Fraud Campaign

One of the event’s highlights was the presentation of the Anti-Immigration Fraud Campaign, led by Katherine Gómez, CEO of La Victoria Foundation. This campaign is crucial in helping our community identify and avoid fraudulent situations that can lead to devastating consequences.

Common Types of Immigration Fraud

During the presentation, the most common types of immigration fraud faced by Latino immigrants were discussed, including:

  • Promises of Fake Visas or Work Permits: Scammers promise visas or work permits in exchange for money without delivering any real service.
  • Fake Legal Services: Individuals posing as lawyers or immigration experts offering incorrect or harmful advice.
  • Application Processing Scams: Charging money for processing services that are either not performed or not guaranteed.

Vulnerability of Latino Immigrants

Katherine Gómez also highlighted the vulnerability of Latino immigrants to fraud. Many in our community face language barriers, a lack of knowledge about their rights, and fear of authorities, making them easy targets for scammers. It is essential for everyone to be informed and empowered to protect themselves and their families.

A Call to Action

On this National Colombian Migrant Day, we want to emphasize the importance of education and prevention in the fight against immigration fraud. Everyone deserves access to accurate information and resources to make informed decisions.

At La Victoria Foundation, we reaffirm our commitment to supporting and guiding our community. Together, we can create a safer and more secure environment for all Colombian immigrants in New York.
